"GETTING FROM GIS TO HIGH QUALITY MAPS"

Overview

Geographic information system capabilities include tools for making maps. These tools are usually more than adequate for most mapping projects, particularly when used by someone proficient with the software. However, high quality cartography often involves results beyond the capabilities of GIS software and/or the devices for printing their output. This session's speakers discussed how to improve maps made using ArcView and how to produce the highest quality maps using data and/or graphics files from GIS.

Presentations:

Jim Scace, Sr. Planner/GIS , Pioneer Valley Planning Commission
“Tips and Tricks for Producing better ArcView Maps”

Mr Scace has been heavily involved with developing community build out analyses that are occurring statewide. The build out results are mapped using ArcView and he shared his experiences, in particular focusing on incorporating postscript and other files into ArcView maps.

Herb Heidt and Eliza McClennen, Mapworks
"Taking Control of Design in GIS, The Cartographers' Perspective"

The presenters discussed the cartographic work their company contributed to the recently published book “Mapping Boston”.

Robert Von Elgg, Manager, Cartography and Design, VHB, Inc.
“Designing Maps for Offset Print Production”

Offset printing offers the highest quality medium for reproducing maps and high quality reproduction begins at the design stage. Robert von Elgg discussed the process of going from computer to ink on paper.
