Massachusetts Highway Department Roads - October 2003

Download this layer

OVERVIEW

Click to view larger imageThis datalayer represents linework from the USGS 1:100,000 Roads Digital Line Graphs (DLGs) with additional linework from the Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD). Many of the new roads were provided to MHD by municipalities on various town-scale maps. Also, MHD made edits to existing DLG features, in many cases using the MassGIS 1:5,000 digital orthophotography as a backdrop to better spatially position the linework. In the current version, adjustment to the ortho imagery is nearly complete for nine counties (Berkshire, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Plymouth, Bristol, Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket); parts of  Middlesex County also have adjusted linework. In addition, this layer includes extensive attribute information ("inventory file") maintained by the MHD which has been llinked to all features. The layer is up-to-date through June 2003.

Future updates will complete the process of conflating (attaching) the MHD inventory and street attribute data to the 1:5,000 Road Centerlines that were interpreted as part of the Digital Orthophoto development project.

In ArcSDE this layer is named MHDROADS_ARC. The MHDROADS layer is also stored in the QUAD library. Coverages are tiled by 7.5-minute USGS Quad sheets and are named MRD. A subset of this layer comprising major roads has been created for smaller-scale mapping. See the MHD Major Roads datalayer description. As of November 2001, roads defined as Tracks and Trails have been removed and placed in their own statewide layer, Tracks and Trails.

PRODUCTION
MassGIS received the Mid-year 2003 MHD Road Inventory Data from the Bureau of Transportation Planning and Development and further processed the data to facilitate display, particularly in the MassGIS Data Viewer.  Processing included:
  • building routes for the items CSN, STREET_NAME, ROUTE, and ADMIN_TYPE;
  • and building five subclasses of annotation (MAJOR2, MAJOR, LARGE, MEDIUM, and SMALL) which may be used for displaying street names depending on scale (in Arcplot use textset font prior to issuing the annotext command);
  • adding the CLASS and ADMIN_TYPE items used to facilitate display;
  • adding the ALTRTNUM<1-4> and ALTRT1TYPE items.

The CLASS item was coded using information in the MRD.INV table as follows:
 1 = ACC_CON = 1 AND AUTO-RT-NUMBER NC '    '
 2 = (ACC_CON = 0 OR ACC_CON = 2) AND (DIV-L-NUM-TR-LA > 1 AND AUTO-RT-NUMBER NC '   ')

 5 = FUNC-CLASS = 0 OR FUNC-CLASS = 6
 6 = SERIAL_NUMBER = 0
 7 = (CLASS < 1 OR CLASS > 3) AND (FAC_TYPE > 0 AND FAC_TYPE < 8) AND (AUTO-RT-NUMBER CN '    ') AND  (FUNC-CLASS = 0 OR FUNC-CLASS > 2)
Note: class 7 was coded after the previous 6 had been coded.

MAINTENANCE
The Massachusetts Highway Department regularly updates this layer. MassGIS receives and makes available updated data at least once a year. In December 2002 the ALTRTNUM<1-4> and ALTRT1TYPE items were added to the arc attribute table. With the Mid-year 2003 update, the related STREETS file was dropped, as all the items have been added to the INVENTORY file for ease of use.
