The PWSDEP_PT feature class should always be used in association with the following related DEP water supply protection datalayers:
DEP Approved Wellhead Protection Areas (Zone II)
PWS sources with assigned Zone IIs are related to the DEP Approved Wellhead Protection Area (Zone II) datalayer by ZII_NUM. Please note that multiple PWS sources may be associated with one Zone II.
DEP Interim Wellhead Protection Areas (IWPA)
Although there is no database relate between the PWS sources and the IWPA datalayer, it is important to always display IWPAs with DEP PWS point data on any map or project.
DEP Surface Water Supply Protection Areas
(SWP_ZONES_POLY)
Surface water supply protection areas are related to the PWS surface
water source points by SOURCE_ID. Surface water protection areas
are assigned to active and inactive surface water sources (TYPE =
‘SW’), but not to emergency surface water sources (TYPE = ‘ESW’).
This layer replaces the now discontinued MassDEP ZONEA_POLY, ZONEB_POLY
and ZONEC_POLY layers.
DEP Surface Water Supply Watersheds (SWP_WATERSHEDS_POLY)
Contains the watershed extents for all surface water supplies including active, inactive, emergency, sources outside of Massachusetts, watersheds that extend into other states and watersheds of sources from other states that extend into Massachusetts. Surface water intakes on Class B Rivers are not included.
The DEP GIS Program, in
cooperation with DEP Drinking Water Program (DWP) maintains this
datalayer. Updates are made on a quarterly (Dec., Mar., June, and
Sept.) basis, in accordance with the DWP’s PWS new PWS source approval
schedule. The updated datalayer is then shared through MassGIS. As a
standard component of this quarterly update, The DEP GIS Program
removes abandoned sources in accordance with WQTS. The addition of new
PWS sources is dependant on locational information made available by
the DEP DWP at the time of quarterly update. Datalayer updates may also
include refinements to existing PWS source locations.
If you have questions regarding this datalayer, please contact the DEP
GIS Program at (617) 556-1115 or (617) 574-6856. General and technical
questions regarding public water supplies or Massachusetts drinking
water regulations should be directed to the DEP DWP (617) 556-1055.
In September 2002, a new TYPE code ESW (Emergency Surface Water) was
assigned to 65 surface water intake records to differentiate them from
active and inactive surface water (SW) intakes. According to DEP
Drinking Water Program policy ESWs (although still considered public
water supplies under 310 CMR 22.00) do not have surface water supply
protection areas. In November, 2002, 6 sources were removed, 12 sources
added, and 22 sources moved/refined.
In March 2003, 13 sources were added, 6 removed, and 60 locations
refined. In April 2003, 8 sources were added, 5 removed, and 38
modified. In August, 2003, 41 sources were added, 13 sources were
removed, and 35 source locations were revised. In November 2003, 15
source locations were added, 7 abandoned sources were removed, and 35
source locations were refined.
In February 2004, 21 were sources added, 15 were removed, and the
locations of 16 were changed. In June 2004, 52 were added, 24 removed,
and 58 moved. In August, 2004, 34 sources were added, 12 sources were
removed, and 31 sources moved/refined. In December 2004, 14 sources
were added, 44 sources removed, and locations were refined for 18
existing PWSs.
In March 2005, 14 sources were removed and 16 were added. In June,
2005, 14 sources were added, 19 removed and 8 moved. In September,
2005, 12 sources were added, 12 abandoned sources were removed, and 7
sources were moved. In December 2005, 40 sources were added, 15
removed, and 10 moved.
In June 2006, 28 sources were added, 20 removed and 5 moved.
In January 2007, 38 sources were added, 14 moved and 21 removed. In
April 2007, 34 sources were added, 25 removed and 11 moved. In November
2007, Table PWS_PT_SWPBASINS was discontinued, Two new surface water
supply protections area layers (SWP_ZONES_POLY
and SWP_WATERSHEDS_POLY)
were introduced. The new SWP_ZONES_POLY layer supersedes
the ZONEA_POLY, ZONEB_POLY and ZONEC_POLY layers, which are no longer
supported.
In December 2008, 92 sources were added, 75 removed and 27 moved.
In March 2009, 46 sources were added, 5 removed and 14 moved. In June 2009, 19 sources were added and 15 were removed.
In March 2010, 50 sites were added, 28 removed and 24 moved.
