Map Themes Available for Printing The following paragraphs describe all of the standard theme maps currently available from MassGIS. Except where noted below, maps are printed in full color on 23" x 34" or 34" x 46" paper.. The size and orientation of the plots, either landscape or portrait, is determined by the map's geographic extent. Unless indicated below, scale for most maps defaults to 1:25,000; some maps may be plotted at a smaller scale (e.g. 1:50,000) so that the entire extent is included. See the Map Production and Printing Page for complete details on all of MassGIS' map products, including information on how to order. Base MapDisplays standard "base map" features, including hydrography (lakes and rivers), wetlands, Mass. Highway Department Roads, elevation contours, trains, transmission lines, political boundaries, and geographic name annotation. ORDER | Back to Top Color Ortho ImageryDisplays the 2001 1/2 meter resolution color orthophoto imagery, Mass Highway Roads street name labels and route shields, Geographic place name labels and Town boundaries. There are TWO display options. The extent of ONE city/town, where the scale will default to the size of the city/town. The other option is the enter coordinates for a center point and select the scale and page size. ORDER | Back to Top Land UseDisplays in color all twenty-one categories from the Current Land Use datalayer and base map features. Data is suitable for use at 1:25,000 scale or smaller; however, at much smaller scales, this data may become undistinguishable. ORDER | Back to Top Open SpaceDisplays Protected and Recreational Open Space parcels compiled by the Open Space Mapping Project with base map features. Parcels are color-coded to indicate by which public, private or non-profit agency they are owned. This theme will display the most recent data verified by the Open Space Project as of the date of printing. ORDER | Back to Top Open Space/Water ResourcesDisplays Protected and Recreational Open Space parcels compiled by the Open Space Mapping Project with Aquifers (high- and medium-yield), DEP-Approved Zone IIs, Interim Wellhead Protection Areas, Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, wetlands, Public Water Supplies and base map features. ORDER | Back to Top Statewide Land Conservation PlanDisplays 1.5 million acres of the most significant available open space land, representing about half such land in the state that is not already developed or protected. Members of land trusts, conservation commissions, watershed associations, state and federal natural resource agencies, and regional planning agencies collaborated to identify the most important open spaces needed to protect a connected network of water resources, biodiversity habitats, working farms and forests, and outdoor recreation areas. The Plan's goal is to conserve about 1 million acres of the identified lands classified as “developable” by the EOEA Buildout Analyses, to be achieved through partnerships and a variety of conservation tools over the next 20 years. A detailed description of the Plan is included with the statewide map. ORDER | Back to Top Title 5Displays areas affected by Title 5 regulations, including estimated setbacks, water resources (drainage basins, Zone IIs, IWPAs, hydrography, wetlands, NHESP Vernal Pools and Public Water Supplies), ACECs, DEP Permitted Solid Waste Facilities and base map features. Detailed data sources and guidance notes for map use are included. Available by municipality or quad. ORDER | Back to Top DEP MCP (21E) Numerical Ranking System (NRS)Available as a Site Map or Large Format. Displays environmental data suitable for a Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP or Chapter 21E) site assessment as required by the Department of Environmental Protection. These datalayers include Potentially Productive Aquifers, Non-potential Drinking Water Source Areas (shown by high and medium yield), Sole Source Aquifers, Public Water Supplies, Zone IIs, Interim Wellhead Protection Areas, Wetlands, Protected Open Space, Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, DEP Permitted Solid Waste Facilities, NHESP Habitats and Certified Vernal Pools, and base map features. Available by municipality, quad or client-specified site. Site maps are 8½" x 11" in size, printed at 1:15,000 scale and include 500' and 1/2 mile radii. Quads and most municipalities are printed at 1:25,000 scale. ORDER SITE MAP or LARGE FORMAT MAP | Back to Top Priority ResourcesDisplays Aquifers (high- and medium-yield, Potential and Non-potential Drinking Water Source Areas, EPA Designated Sole Source), Major and Minor Drainage Basin boundaries, Public Water Supplies (with annotation), DEP-approved Zone IIs, Interim Wellhead Protection Areas, wetlands and hydrography (scale sensitive), Open Space, Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, NHESP Wetlands Habitats data layers, DEP Permitted Solid Waste Facilities, Surface Water Protection areas (Zone A's) and base map features. ORDER | Back to Top Surficial GeologyDisplays 1:250,000 scale surficial geology and base map features. Strictly recommended for regional map extents, this map theme should not be used for site-specific analysis.ORDER | Back to Top Water Supply ProtectionDisplays developed lands (high-density residential, commercial, industrial, waste disposal), Aquifers (high- and medium-yield), Drainage Basin and Sub-Basin boundaries, Public Water Supplies (with annotation), DEP-approved Zone IIs, Interim Wellhead Protection Areas, watershed areas, wetlands and hydrography (scale sensitive), and base map features. ORDER | Back to Top Water Supply Protection/Land UseDisplays 21 classifications of current land use, Aquifers (high- and medium-yield), Public Water Supplies (with annotation), DEP-approved Zone IIs, Interim Wellhead Protection Areas, hydrography (scale sensitive), DEP Permitted Solid Waste Facilities, Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, NPDES Discharge Locations, Discharge to Groundwater Permit Locations, and base map features. ORDER | Back to Top Solid Waste AssessmentDisplays both the Solid Waste Assessment/Land Use and Solid Waste Assessment/Priority Resources themes as 2 separate maps on one page. Includes 1/2- and 1-mile DEP Permitted Solid Waste Facilities buffers. Available for a municipality or quad. ORDER | Back to Top Solid Waste Assessment/Land UseDisplays the Land Use theme with 1/2- and 1-mile DEP Permitted Solid Waste Facilities buffers. ORDER | Back to Top Solid Waste Assessment/Priority ResourcesDisplays the DEP MCP 21E theme with 1/2- and 1-mile DEP Permitted Solid Waste Facilities buffers. ORDER | Back to Top Shoreline ChangeFor coastal communities, the Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management (MCZM) office has generated a set of shoreline change maps covering the entire Massachusetts outer (ocean-facing) shoreline (see Index Map), documenting erosion and accretion trends by displaying three to four historic shorelines between the mid-1800s to 1978. The maps, called Historic Shoreline Change Analysis Maps, are printed at a scale of 1:10,000. These maps have the longterm shoreline change rate calculated and printed at 50 meter intervals along the shore. Tables and histograms displaying all short- and long-term shoreline change rates accompany these maps which are atop color orthophotography. Complete information on the Shoreline Change program may be downloaded in MS Word 6.0 format (shorech.doc - 15 kb.) and Adobe .pdf format (shorech.pdf - 13 kb.). ORDER | Back to Top DEP Eelgrass ResourcesDisplays the eelgrass, Zostera marina, resources for the entire state coastline. The eelgrass data was photo-interpreted and extensively field checked during the years 1994 thru 1997. The data is projected onto a NOAA Navigational Chart base which includes coastal features and bathymetry. The maps can be produced at varying scales depending on the area of interest. The maps are available in two sizes: 24x26 in. ($15.00) and 32x38 in. ($20.00).ORDER | Back to Top Wetlands Orthophoto (at 1:5,000 or 1:10,000 scale)Maps display wetlands features together with hydrological connections as part of Massachusetts Wetlands Inventory atop color ortho imagery. Features include all open water areas, swamps, marshes, bogs, and dunes, together with coastal systems of tidal flat, rocky shore, beach, and barrier beach environments. Hydrological connections depict both active and intermittent stream courses. 1:5,000 scale maps ($15.00) are tiled by Massachusetts State Plane orthophoto quads and display 1-meter resolution orthophotography, while 1:10,000 scale maps ($20.00)include four orthophoto quads, both in the same 32” by 32” area, with 2-meter resolution orthophotography. The entire 43” by 33” sheet area includes legend, description of wetlands codes and methodology, together with inset map pinpointing location of quad or quads in a larger context of roads and towns.
