What's New in the Latest Viewer (ArcGIS 8.x Version)
The ArcGIS 8.x Data Viewer began distribution in 2003. The most significant change, is in the data format from coverages to shapefiles.

This page explains what is NEW or DIFFERENT about the latest version of the ArcGIS 8.x MassGIS Data Viewer.

Newest Version:
  • The newest version of the ArcGIS 8.x Data Viewer is Version 2.
    Version 1: Januray - April 2003
    Version 2: May 2003 - present

If you have an older version of the Data Viewer, you can download the newest Data Viewer, along with the most recent documentation and lyr files.

DataViewer Button:
  • The DataViewer button contains the same functionality as the A (Browse to data) and Z (Zoom to data) buttons in the ArcView 3.x Data Viewer. The screen that pops up after clicking the DataViewer button contains all the functionality for the Data Viewer in three sections: Browse, Zoom and a new section, Search.
Search allows for finding specific data, based on keywords. This can help save time, rather then looking through all the levels in the Browse section to locate the data in which you are interested.

LYR Files:
  • To control the display of data within ArcGIS 8.x, lyr files are used. Lyr files store all the properties of the layer, including data source, connection info, symbology info, any joins/relate infor, and any definition queries.

NEW in Version 2:

Enter Point:
  • There is the Enter Point feature in the Zoom section. In the Category (first menu), one of the options is Enter point, which will bring up a new screen that lets the user enter coordinates in a variety of systems to place a point on the map in NAD 83 meters. The coordinates can be in NAD27(feet), NAD83(feet or meters), UTM(meters) and Latitude/Longitude(decimal degrees or degrees minutes seconds). After you enter the coordinates a red X is placed at the coordinate point on the map.

Add Your Own Data:
  • Incorporate your own spatial data into the Data Viewer. All you need is to create an lyr file from your data. The first screen that appears after clicking the DataViewer button is the browse section. In the bottom right corner of that section is a new button called 'Add Lyr'. Clicking this button will bring up a form for adding your own data to the Data Viewer.
