What's New in the Latest Viewer (ArcGIS 9.x Version)
In January 2003, the data format MassGIS distributes switched from coverages to shapefiles.

The ArcGIS 8.x Data Viewer began distribution in 2003 and was discontinued/no longer supported in March 2006

The ArcGIS 9.x Data Viewer began distribution in July 2004.

This page explains what is NEW or DIFFERENT about the latest versions of the ArcGIS  MassGIS Data Viewers.

Newest Version:

  • The newest version of the ArcGIS 9.x Data Viewer is Version 2.
Version 1: July 1, 2004 - April 2005
Version 2: April 2005 - Present
If you have upgraded to the most recent ESRI release of ArcGIS 9.x, you can request the newest Data Viewer, along with the most recent documentation and lyr files.

DataViewer Toolbar (ArcGIS 9.x):

  • The Data Viewer has been rewitten for ArcGIS 9.x to be distributed as a dll file. This means that when you add the file to ArcMap, the MassGIS Data Viewer toolbar will be included in any document you open after the intial load. The toolbar contains the A and Z buttons just as in the ArcView 3.x Data Viewers. There is also a 'Search' button that allows for finding specific data, based on keywords.
  • Due to changes ESRI has made to the ArcGIS ArcObjects programming language, the 9.x version of the Data Viewer is not compatable and will NOT work with any of the ArcGIS  8.x versions.

LYR Files:
  • To control the display of data within ArcGIS, lyr files are used. Lyr files store all the properties of the layer, including data source, connection info, symbology info, any joins/relate infor, and any definition queries. Unfortunately lyr files are not backwards compatible, meaning that since they are created within ArcGIS 9.x, they will not work with earlier versions of ArcGIS (8.0, 8.1, 8.2 and 8.3). They will work with the 9.x Data Viewer.

Enter Point:
  • There is the Enter Point feature in the Zoom section. In the Category (first menu), one of the options is Enter point, which will bring up a new screen that lets the user enter coordinates in a variety of systems to place a point on the map in NAD 83 meters. The coordinates can be in NAD27(feet), NAD83(feet or meters), UTM(meters) and Latitude/Longitude(decimal degrees or degrees minutes seconds). After you enter the coordinates a red X is placed at the coordinate point on the map.

Add Your Own Data:
  • Incorporate your own spatial data into the Data Viewer. All you need is to create an lyr file from your data. The first screen that appears after clicking the DataViewer button is the browse section. In the bottom right corner of that section is a new button called 'Add Lyr'. Clicking this button will bring up a form for adding your own data to the Data Viewer.
