Files
for Download (ArcView 3.x Version)
Viewer Updates - versions as of
July 3, 2001
Users who wish to update
their Viewer projects may do so by downloading the appropriate file directly
over the Internet. You may want to update your Viewer because:
-
you have upgraded your version of ArcView
since you last installed the Viewer;
-
you were previously using the "Runtime"
Viewer and have now purchased a full version of ArcView;
-
you would like to take advantage of
all the new features in the latest Viewer;
-
you need to reinstall the Viewer and
you don't have the files on CD.
Remember that in order to use the latest
versions of the Viewer, you need to have full versions of either ArcView
GIS 3.1.1 (not 3.1) or ArcView GIS 3.2 or 3.2a. (ArcView 3.1.1 and 3.2a
are updates to the original software and may require you to download the
respective upgrade patches from the ESRI website (http://www.esri.com/software/arcview/avsoftware.html).
The MassGIS Runtime Data Viewer is only available
on CDROM due to license agreements.
Also, keep in mind that the latest
MassGIS Data Viewer works best with the latest version of the MassGIS set
of datalayers. If your set of MassGIS data is over 1 year old you
may prefer to order a new CD which contains both
a new set of MassGIS data plus a new version of the MassGIS Data Viewer.
If you use the latest MassGIS Data Viewer with an older set of MassGIS
data be aware that a few datalayers under the "A" button will either not
be available (because new types of data have been added since your data
order) or not work do to incompatibility issues.
To download an update to the Data
Viewer, you need to know:
-
the version of ArcView you are using
(appears in the banner when you start ArcView);
-
the format of the GIS data you received
from MassGIS, either organized in Arc/Info Libraries or as single "clipped"
coverages for your area of interest. All Statewide Data Viewer sets contain
Library Layers. Regional Viewers may contain either type. To find out the
format of the data on your Regional CD(s):
-
if you received a Viewer after July
1, 1999, look for the words "library layers" or "clipped coverages" in
the 'Contents' section on the front cover of your CD case;
-
if you received a Viewer prior to July
1, 1999, review the contents of the CD: if there is a folder called "oqtiles"
at the top level of your CD, it contains clipped coverages; if this folder
is not present, your CD contains library layers.
-
the file format your operating system
can process.
Once you know this information, hold
down the shift key and left-click on one of the links in the following
table (with some browsers you can use the right mouse button to click on
the link and select 'save as...'):

The above downloadable files contain
the ArcView projects (including theme inventory table and environ.txt file),
legend files, and complete documentation (including an introduction to
the Viewer and developer notes) - all the files that appear in the 'data'
folder in which you originally installed the Viewer on your hard drive.
Once you have downloaded one of the
above archives:
-
rename your exisitng 'data' folder 'data_old';
-
create a new folder named 'data' parallel
to 'data_old';
-
Run the downloaded .exe file to extract
the files into the new 'data' folder (run the .exe by double-clicking on
the file name in the Windows Explorer);
-
you may delete the 'data_old' folder
but we recommend that you save it "just in case".
The next time you open the Data Viewer,
the new version will load.
Installation Instructions
Users unfamiliar with installation
of the Data Viewer should also click on one of the file names (depending
on which verison of the Data Viewer you are using) in the table below to
download the Installation Instructions in .PDF format (readable in the
free Adobe Acrobat Reader):
Documentation Files
Users may also download
a file containing just Data Viewer documentation. These files also
may be found in the "docs" directory in any one of the Update files available
for download in the first table above. Documentation includes an
introduction to ArcView, a "What's New" file, an Errata file, developer
instructions, and a Viewer script flowchart diagram in PostScript format
and as a Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0 file.
