The Massachusetts State Police on October 30, 2008 honored 17 state and local police officers and one civilian for various contributions to public safety, acts of bravery, and police work beyond the normal call of duty. The awards ceremony, held at the Grand Staircase of the State House, was led by Governor Deval Patrick, Secretary of Public Safety and Security Kevin Burke, and Colonel Mark Delaney, superintendent of the State Police.

On Monday, May 5, 2008, 50 municipal police recruits reported to the Massachusetts State Police Academy in New Braintree for 21 weeks of recruit police training. The class marked the first time in 21 years that the Massachusetts State Police trained municipal police recruits. This worthwhile endeavor was the result of over a year of planning, innovation and integration with the Municipal Police Training Committee with the support of the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

In April of 1958, Massachusetts State Trooper Richard "Dick" Clemens and 8-year-old Ed Locke posed for famed illustrator Norman Rockwell at the Howard Johnson's Restaurant on Pittsfield-Lennox Road in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. When completed, an illustration entitled "The Runaway" was published on the cover of the September 20, 1958 edition of The Saturday Evening Post.

During the week of June 23 - 27, 2008, the Massachusetts State Police hosted Child Abduction Response Team (C.A.R.T.) Training at the State Police Academy in New Braintree. The C.A.R.T. Training Program, provided by Fox Valley Technical College through funding provided by the Department of Justice, is designed for professionals from a variety of disciplines within a community that may be involved in the immediate response to a missing, endangered or abducted child incident.

On Thursday June 5, 2008 the Massachusetts State Police honored twenty-six award recipients at a ceremony held at the Grand Staircase of the State House in Boston. The award recipients include state and local police officers and nine civilians.

On Thursday, June 5, 2008 the Massachusetts State Police honored thirty-eight award recipients at a Superintendent's Commendation Ceremony held at State Police General Headquarters in Framingham.

On June 3rd at 1:00 p.m. the Massachusetts State Police Marine Section and the Massachusetts Environmental Police hosted a press event at the State Police Marine Section in Boston. This event aimed to educate the public on boating safety in advance of the summer boating season.

On Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., the Molly Bish Foundation hosted the 8th Annual Missing Children's Day Ceremony in the Nurses Hall at the State House in Boston. This ceremony honors the memory of missing and murdered children and demonstrates support for missing and abducted children who have been safely returned to their families.

Danielle Wohl, a brain injury survivor, helped the Massachusetts State Police launch their Spring 2008 Click It or Ticket seatbelt campaign at an event at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. Injured nearly 20 years ago when the car in which she was an unbelted passenger was hit by a drunk driver, Ms. Wohl continues to suffer memory loss and visual impairment as a result of the crash. She urged members of the public to buckle up every time they drive or ride in a motor vehicle.

Today, April 29, 2008, Colonel Mark F. Delaney, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, announced the promotion of 67 members of the State Police. The ceremony was held at the State Police Headquarters in Framingham at 7:00 p.m.

On Wednesday April 9, 2008, in a ceremony held at Massachusetts State Police General Headquarters, Mr. Richard Bates, Division Administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) presented two FMCSA Leadership Awards to the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section (CVES).

The Massachusetts State Police and local police joined together today at the Natick District Court to raise awareness about the dangers of aggressive and distracted driving. The event kicked-off the Commonwealth's 2008 "Road Respect" Mobilization, a statewide coordinated effort involving additional directed traffic enforcement and public information that runs through April 16, 2008.

On Friday March 14, 2008, Colonel Mark Delaney, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, met with Commissioner Fachtna Murphy and Chief Inspector Kathleen O'Toole of the Garda Siochana during a visit to State Police General Headquarters. The Garda Siochana is Ireland's National Police Force which Murphy has served as Commissioner since 2007. Kathleen O'Toole currently serves as the Chief Inspector of the Garda Inspectorate but was formerly a Lieutenant Colonel on the Massachusetts State Police from 1992 to 1994.

On January 18, the MSP was at the Charles River Esplanade Lagoon in Boston to demonstrate the inherent dangers of thin ice and the lifesaving steps in an ice emergency. Troopers assigned to the Underwater Recovery Unit and the Marine Section demonstrated a simulated recovery.

On Jan 11, the MSP hosted a child safety fair at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree in observance of the 11th Annual National AMBER Alert Awareness Day. This day honors the memory of Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl who was abducted and murdered in Arlington, Texas in 1996.

"Keeping our roads safer during the holidays is a top priority for those involved with highway safety in Massachusetts," said Sheila Burgess, Director of Highway Safety for EOPSS. "We need to keep working together year-round to educate everyone of the dangers of impaired driving and underage drinking."

We urge motorists to be safe on the roads of the Commonwealth this winter. If possible, do not travel, or keep travel to a minimum during periods of winter weather in order to allow snow removal crews to clear the roadway. For those who need to drive in adverse winter weather conditions, the State Police recommend these winter driving safety tips.

For over 20 years, the MSP has partnered with the USMC in providing drop-off areas for toys donated to Toys for Tots. As in years past, this year people can drop-off new, unwrapped toys at any State Police Barracks through Friday December 14th. This holiday season there is a specific need for toys designed for children under 2-years-old and for non-violent toys for children ages 9-12.

As part of the Fall 2007 "Click It or Ticket" Mobilization, we are encouraging safer driving and increased safety belt use during the Thanksgiving Holiday. A "Click It or Ticket" media event took place on November 20, 2007 at State Police General Headquarters in Framingham.

On October 5, 2007, members of the State Police were recognized in an Awards Ceremony and Luncheon held at the Sheraton Boston. Lt/Col. Walsh, Deputy Superintendent, presented the Department's winners with their Commonwealth Citation for Outstanding Performance (PRP).

Major Alben completed a Master of Arts Degree in Homeland Security Studies at the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) on Sept. 21, 2007, in Monterey, CA.

On September 26, Sgt. Robert Sylvester attended the 12th Annual Criminal Justice Fair at Westfield State College. Over 100 federal, state and local law enforcement officials participated in this event.
