DIVISION OF INSURANCE APPROVES SAFE DRIVER DISCOUNTS FOR 2000
(BOSTON, MA) Commissioner of Insurance Linda L. Ruthardt today affirmed the approval of voluntary rate deviations proposed by private passenger automobile insurers for their policyholders with the safest driving records.
"While smaller than in past years, I'm pleased that insurers still recognize the importance of encouraging and rewarding safe driving practices," said Commissioner Ruthardt.
The voluntary discounts (see attached chart) are typically given to drivers rated at Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP) steps 9 & 10 and result in further premium savings beyond the credits already given under the SDIP for drivers with Steps 9 through 14. The approved deviations reduce a policyholder's premium by the offered percentage after all other applicable discounts have been incorporated.
The deviations apply to policies issued on or renewed after January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2000. Policyholders can expect to receive their adjusted 2000 premium balances in the coming months as insurers incorporate the deviations into their billing systems.
The Division of Insurance is also currently reviewing group discounts being offered by insurers. Those that have already been approved can be viewed as of January 14, 2000 at the Division's website at www.mass.gov/doi . The website includes the list of approved voluntary "safe driver" discounts and will be updated regularly to include the most recent group discount approvals. Consumers are encouraged to contact their agent, broker or insurance company to determine whether they qualify for any of the approved group discounts. The Division's Consumer Service Unit can provide further information and can be reached at (617) 521-7777.
