Bowler Named Commissioner of the Division of Insurance

Bob Pozen, Chief of Commerce and Labor, today announced the reappointment of Julie M. Bowler as Commissioner of the Massachusetts Division of Insurance, a post that she was first named to in April 2002.

"In her past ten months on the job, Julie has demonstrated strong leadership skills and a record of achievement in utilizing the latest technologies to increase the efficiency of the agency while always keeping the interests of the policyholders first," said Pozen.

In her tenure with the Division of Insurance as First Deputy Commissioner, and most recently as Commissioner, Bowler guided the Division through the review and approval of several high profile insurance transactions, including the reorganization of John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company.

"It is an honor and privilege to continue to serve in this capacity and I thank Chief Pozen for the responsibility he entrusts to me," said Bowler.

"These are challenging times in insurance and I, in turn, place a high level of confidence in my staff to protect policyholders and monitor the solvency of an industry that is critical to the health of the Commonwealth's economy," Bowler said.

A native of West Springfield and resident of South Boston, Bowler received a B.A. from Assumption College in 1985, a M.A. from the University of Dallas in 1987, a M.B.A. from the University of Massachusetts/Boston in 2001 and is a doctoral candidate in Biomedical Ethics at Georgetown University.
