Q: What is the authority of the AAB?
A: The Board's statutory authority derives from Massachusetts General Law Chapter 22, Section 13A.
Q: What are the AAB Rules and Regulations?
A: The AAB Rules and Regulations, more commonly known as 521 CMR, can be found on its website. Alternatively, you may purchase hard copies at the State Bookstore, Room 116, State House, Boston, MA 02133. You may place orders over the telephone by calling 617-727-2834.
Q: Can I obtain a written decision from a Building Inspector?
A: Building Inspectors do not have the authority to suggest compliance alternatives to 521 CMR, as they do for 780 CMR, and accordingly they are required to strictly enforce the AAB Rules and Regulations. The Board alone has the authority to grant variances for alternative compliance solutions and relief from strict compliance with the code. .
Q: When does the Board meet?

Q: Who are the members of the Board?
A: The Board consists of nine members: the Secretary of Public Safety or her designee; the Secretary of Elder Affairs or her designee; the Director of the Office on Disability or her designee; and six members appointed by the Governor in consultation with the Secretary of Public Safety from lists submitted by the Director of the Office on Disability. Three of the appointed members are selected after consultation with advocacy groups on behalf of persons with disabilities. The Governor, Secretary and Director exercise their best efforts to ensure at least two members are registered architects. The chairperson is elected annually by the members. Q: Will the Board's staff meet with me to discuss accessibility?
A: The Board is unable to do full plan reviews and/or approvals. However, the Board's staff members are able to meet in order to discuss issues concerning complaints and variances. Additionally, the staff also responds to written requests for advisory opinions on issues of accessibility.
Q: How do I propose a change to the AAB regulations?
A: All requests for proposed changes to the AAB regulations must be sent in writing to the Board's Regulations Subcommittee at the AAB's office address.
