The Board of Registration of Electrologists ("Board") is aware that licensed Massachusetts electrologists want to be able to offer laser hair removal services in conjunction with their electrolysis practice. As explained in the Board's August 18, 2006, , laser hair removal does not fall within the current definition of "electrolysis" in Chapter 112, Section 87EEE, and therefore, falls outside the scope of the electrology license.
Through legislation enacted on May 12, 2006 ( Chapter 81 of the Acts of 2006), the state legislature established a Medical Spa Task Force within the Board of Registration in Medicine to study medical spas and the use of related procedures, including laser hair removal. Task Force materials are available on the Board of Medicine's website at www.massmedboard.org. The Board of Registration of Electrologists and Division of Professional Licensure are currently working with the Medical Spa Task Force to assist in the drafting of recommended standards and regulations concerning the practice of laser hair removal services. The Board will update this advisory as necessary to reflect any changes as a result of Task Force recommendations.
