BOARD INTERPRETATION
LAVATORY INSTALLED OUTSIDE OF A BATHROOM
(enacted 04-30-2014)

1.   Introduction

The Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters (“Board”) has voted to interpret the language of 248 CMR 10.03 Definitions stating:

Bathroom (Residential). A room equipped with a bathtub or shower stall, toilet and a lavatory basin or any combination thereof.

2.   Interpretation

The Board interprets that Hotels, Motels and Dwellings may have a lavatory installed just outside of the bathroom.

3.   Rationale

105 CMR (Department of Public Health) only requires a lavatory be installed in the same area for Hotels, Motels and Dwellings. For all commercial, industrial establishments and places of assembly, lavatories must be installed in the same room.
