HIGHLIGHTS OF 248 CMR AS IT APPLIES TO THE USE OF PVC IN MASSACHUSETTS
- Not for use in buildings over ten (10) stories in height regardless of occupancy.
- Number of stories: Reference 780 CMR.
- In a mixed use occupancy, PVC may be installed in residential portions only. The non-residential portion of the system, as defined in 780 CMR, must remain under commercial application.
- Schedule 40 is not allowed for use on commercial urinal waste at present.
- When using PVC for waste in beauty parlors, barber shops, photo labs, soda fountains, bar sinks, indirect wastes from dialysis equipment, PVC is allowed from the point of dilution to a point 6" above the flood level rim of the fixture being served.
- PVC and ABS cannot be solvent-welded to each other.
- Expansion joints are required between every other branch interval and on horizontal runs exceeding 20' (feet). Offsets do not eliminate the need for this requirement.
- PVC shall be sleeved when passing through concrete slabs or walls.
- Fire-stopping shall be in compliance with 780 CMR.
