State Survey Finds High Level Of Pricing Accuracy Among Retailers

Boston, MA (December 2, 2015) - The Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, in conjunction with its Division of Standards, reports high item pricing accuracy among retailers surveyed prior to the holiday shopping season.

Compliance officers surveyed 2,530 items in 88 retail stores across Massachusetts and found 2,525 correctly priced, an overall pricing accuracy of 99.8 percent that exceeds the state pricing accuracy standard of 98 percent.

“It’s reassuring for consumers to know at this very busy time of year that they can be confident in the pricing accuracy of our state’s retailers,” said Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation Undersecretary John Chapman. “The Division of Standards will continue to monitor retail stores throughout the holiday shopping season to ensure that they maintain this high standard for pricing accuracy.”

Civil citations were issued to five stores that scanned higher than the lowest advertised price for an item. They are: BJ’s in Waltham, Payless Shoes in Waltham, Best Buy in Hyannis, Rite Aid in Plainville and Walgreen’s in Wakefield. Pricing errors ranged from a low of ten cents for a container of ice cream at Rite Aid to a high of ten dollars for a pair of shoes at Payless Shoes.
