Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation Goes Mobile To Register Home Improvement Contractors

Boston, MA (November 28, 2016) – The Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation is partnering with the Massachusetts Retail Lumber Dealers Association to register home improvement contractors at locations across the Commonwealth. During the first week of December, Consumer Affairs staff members will be at lumber dealers and retailers throughout the state educating homeowners and contractors on the Home Improvement Contractor law and assisting contractors with registering or renewing a registration online.

“We’re grateful to partner with the Massachusetts Retail Lumber Dealers Association to offer another convenient way to register contractors and increase the program’s awareness,” said Consumer Affairs Undersecretary John Chapman. “Over the last year, we’ve introduced online registration and renewals to reduce the burdens of time and travel and bring more home improvement contractors into compliance with the requirements of the law. Mobile registration is a business-friendly way to register contractors right in the communities where they’re likely to be working.”

The Home Improvement Contractor law (M.G.L. c. 142A) requires individuals performing residential contracting on an existing one to four unit, owner-occupied residential building to be registered as a home improvement contractor. The law also established an arbitration program for resolving disputes between homeowners and contractors, and a Guaranty Fund to compensate consumers up to $10,000 for unpaid judgments against contractors. The Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation registers contractors and facilitates and administers the arbitration program and Guaranty Fund.

Since January 2015, the Office has registered more than 7,200 home improvement contractors that were not previously in compliance with the state’s registration requirement.

Scheduled mobile registration will take place on the following dates and at the following venues:
