Weekly Fraud Awareness and Prevention Fact – Stay Safe on Public WiFi Networks
Free public WiFi is available nearly everywhere: coffee shops, restaurants, retail locations, airports, and even public parks.  While the availability of public WiFi can be a convenience, there are dangers to be aware of.  Hackers can set up fake accounts with generic names and use a variety of methods to intercept and collect your personal information.
Here are some tips to stay safe:

  • Don't automatically connect to WiFi networks: Many devices have a setting that allows you to automatically connect to available wireless networks. Change your settings to manually join public networks.
  • Verify before connecting: If there are a multiple networks available, ask an employee of the establishment which one is the legitimate network.
  • Do not use public WiFi for sensitive or confidential transactions: Ensure you are on a secure connection before making online purchases, using online banking or financial services, or any other activity you want to keep safe and private. When applicable use a VPN connection.
  • Use and update security software: Your work or personal laptop should have the same anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall protection you have at work or home. Make sure security software is installed, turned on, and up to date.
