Liz Casey

Liz CaseyLiz Casey has worked primarily as a teacher, receiving her degree in special education from Lesley College. Her graduate work as a reading specialist was completed at Boston State College. She worked as a teacher in the Boston, Cambridge, and Dedham public school systems.

When MS curtailed full-time work, Liz began a home tutoring business, and volunteered twice a week developing and teaching reading programs in the Boston Public Schools. She has also been a consultant to the Brookline Public School's "Understanding Disabilities Program", the Tufts Medical School Standardized Patient training program, and various programs for the MS Society. She sits on the board of the Boston Community Medical Group, and remains a strong advocate at the Boston Center for Independent Living where she has been a member of the PCA program since 1986.

At the MS Society in the 1980s, Liz initiated support groups and monthly educational workshops focusing on "A Healthy Approach to MS". The MS Society also asked her to participate in a variety of public service and educational videos for that organization. She received their "Community Activist" award in 2007.

In 2006, Liz began working as a Standardized Patient Educator at the Tufts Medical School, where she has been training medical students in disability awareness. She also serves on the Governance Board at the MS Society, and the Board of the Boston Community Medical Group.

Since joining Boston Center for Independent Living and the PCA Program in 1986, Liz has been a strong advocate with them, particularly focusing on an improvement in personal care attendant benefits and wages. She sees this endeavor as a turning point in how we approach long-term care for disabled citizens and seniors.
