Local communities are eligible to apply for grants of up to $250,000 to strengthen nonprofit organizations and increase nonprofits' involvement in projects that help turn our economy around. Experienced nonprofits can apply directly for grants of up to $1 million. To submit an application, review the instructions and program details for the State, Local, and Tribal Government Capacity Building Program and the Nonprofit Capacity Building Program, then apply online through Grants.gov or request an application package from:

A Partnership with Nonprofits to Benefit Communities

The focus of the Strengthening Communities Fund is to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations, whether secular or faith based, to address the broad economic recovery issues present in their communities, including helping low-income individuals secure and retain employment, earn higher wages, obtain better-quality jobs, and gain greater access to state and Federal benefits and tax credits, including ARRA benefits.

Direct Grants

This program is not administered by the Commonwealth, but through the United States Department of Health & Human Services - Administration for Children and Families. Grants are awarded and administered directly from the Federal government to eligible grant recipients.

Application Process and Deadline

The application period is currently open and ends on July 7, 2009. Completed applications must be submitted no later than 5:00 PM, EST on July 7, 2009. The Office of Community Services will not accept applications via facsimile or email. Please request an application package to submit through regular mail or submit your application electronically by going to http://Grants.gov and searching for funding opportunity HHS-2009-ACF-OCS-SI-0091 (Nonprofit Capacity Building Program) or HHS-2009-ACF-OCS-SN-0092 (State, Local, and Tribal Government Capacity Building Program).
