RMV Suspensions Don't Go Unnoticed!

The Registry of Motor Vehicles sends more than 700,000 notices a year to motorists whose driver's licenses are about to be revoked or suspended. By law, the RMV is required to send these notices to the driver's mailing address on record in the RMV database. (Motorists also have a legal obligation to update their RMV mailing address within 30 days after moving.)

These notifications contain the reason behind the impending suspension, whether it's for the most egregious of offenses such as Motor Vehicle Homicide, OUI or an outstanding financial obligation that led another state to revoke your license. The letter also lists the month and day the suspension action will take effect. The RMV typically grants motorists a 10 to 90 day grace period prior to being suspended to address the reason for suspension. In some instances, an RMV hearing officer can extend the grace period.

The suspension notification directs the motorists to the agencies they must contact, lists the necessary forms they will need and lays out the steps they must take to clear the suspension. If the motorist chooses to disregard the notice, their license will be suspended at midnight as of the date listed with no additional notice.
