New Motorcycle Plates

Motorcycle PlateIn order to conform to emerging national standards regarding the size and style of motorcycle plates and in response to requests from the motorcycling community, the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) will be converting all motorcycle plates (excluding state and municipal), to a new plate. The new plate size will be 4" x 7" with 1 1/2 " BLUE lettering with the words MASS and The Spirit of America in red. In addition, the format of the plate will change from the stacked lettering style of one letter over the other (A/X or F/X) to a one row format (AX1234). The new plate becomes effective on January 1, 1999, after which time no motorcycles should be on the road with the old "RED" plate. An example of the new style plate is below.

Since the new inspection cycle begins on January 1, 1999, but the old inspection does not expire until May 31, 1999, the RMV suggests the following options:

  1. For those motorcycle owners who wish to use their motorcycles during the off season, the RMV strongly recommends that they obtain a new sticker when the new inspection cycle begins on January 1, 1999.

  2. For those motorcycle owners who do not wish to use their motorcycles during the off season, the RMV recommends that they obtain a new sticker as soon as the weather permits, keeping in mind that most of the inspection activity occurs during the months of April and May.

The new plate will not have an inspection sticker on it and the inspection sticker on the old plate is not removable. Therefore, all motorcycle owners will be informed that they must carry their old plate and registration certificate as proof of inspection until they receive their new inspection sticker.

After May 31, 1999, all motorcycles must have a current inspection on the new plate.

Further instructions will be mailed to all motorcycle registrants along with their renewal forms.
