Registry Cracks Down on Fraud

Registrar Daniel A. GrabauskasRegistrar Daniel A. Grabauskas announced today that the Registry of Motor Vehicles has implemented an online Social Security verification program. Social Security Online Verification allows the RMV to immediately verify the validity of an applicant’s information online with the U.S. Social Security Administration.

"We are going to do everything we can to reduce the fraudulent use of driver’s licenses and identification cards, online verification allows us to instantly stop the licensing process if an applicant presents false information," said Registrar Grabauskas.

Colonel John DiFava, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police said, "Instant verification will make it more difficult for minors to obtain a fraudulent license or ID card. This will reduce their ability to illegally buy alcohol or go to drinking establishments and will ultimately save lives."

This newly enhanced access will allow the RMV to quickly verify a customer’s name, date of birth and social security number with the SSA before issuing a Massachusetts license or ID. This new system is advantageous to the RMV’s concerted efforts with law enforcement officials to identify individuals accurately and reduce fraud.
