Action to protect privacy of Mass. drivers draws Registrar’s support
Registrar Daniel A. Grabauskas applauded the Supreme Court’s decision this week to protect the rights of Massachusetts’ 4,420,797 licensed drivers. The Court upheld a decision allowing Congress to ban the sale of personal information held by the Registry including photos, addresses and social security numbers.
"This is a very important decision that affects and protects every current and future driver in the Commonwealth," said Registrar Grabauskas. "Massachusetts drivers should not have to surrender personal information to marketers or anybody else in order to obtain a driver’s license."
The Cellucci/Swift administration last year filed the nation’s most comprehensive bill protecting individual privacy rights. Among the bill’s major initiatives was the effort to codify the state’s current Registry of Motor Vehicles policy that prohibits the agency from selling personal information.
Consumer Affairs Director Jennifer Davis Carey says "the Supreme Court decision is a positive step in our ongoing work to protect the privacy rights of our citizens."
