Governor Jane Swift today signed legislation creating a "United We Stand" specialty license plate to benefit relatives of Massachusetts residents killed in the 9/11 attacks.
"The United We Stand license plate blends symbolism and realism. It provides an unmistakable symbol of our unity and courage, and it provides real assistance to those who lost loved ones in the terrorist attacks," Swift said.
Fifty percent of the proceeds from the $40 plate will be distributed to the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund, which will provide assistance at its discretion to family members of the Massachusetts victims.
Twenty-five percent of the proceeds will fund a grant program for local police and fire departments to help them prepare for emergencies, including terrorist attacks. This stream of funds will also help pay for memorials to Massachusetts police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.
The remaining 25 percent will go to the US Department of Justice's Rewards of Justice Program, which apprehends terrorists and brings them to justice.
Applications are available online starting Monday October 7, and the plate should be ready for purchase next month.
