The OSA's Bureau of Special Investigations is charged with the responsibility of investigating fraud within the Commonwealth's public assistance programs, principally those administered by the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Department of Medical Assistance and the Department of Social Services. BSI's fraud investigations result in referrals of millions of dollars annually. BSI focuses on the detection and prevention of fraud and pursues prosecution and recovery of fraudulently obtained funds. BSI's role helps safeguard the state's financial assets and protects vital benefit programs. "The costs of the Commonwealth's public assistance programs provide essential services for over 500,000 of the state's most vulnerable citizens.
