Israel is one of America’s closest allies as well as an important economic partner for the nation and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Israel has forged dynamic partnerships with our state that are vital to our economic future and well-being, such as high-tech and life sciences research. We share common values and a deep commitment to democracy.

Israel is America’s friend – and friends support their friends during times of crisis.

I completely agree with the principles President Obama so eloquently stated this weekend: “If we’re serious about wanting to resolve this situation and create a genuine peace process, it starts with no more missiles being fired into Israel’s territory.”

“There’s no country on Earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders,” the President said, “So we are fully supportive of Israel’s right to defend itself from missiles landing on people’s homes and workplaces and potentially killing civilians. And we will continue to support Israel’s right to defend itself.”

As this crisis has escalated, thousands of Hamas rockets have rained down indiscriminately on Israeli cities and civilian population centers, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. To put this in perspective, as we gather tonight in Newton, Massachusetts, let’s keep in mind that the distance between Gaza City and Tel Aviv is about the same as from Newton to Plymouth, and from Gaza City to Jerusalem is equivalent to Newton to New Bedford.

This leaves no margin of safety and put hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in danger from attacks that come with only brief moments of warning.

While we should all seek a peaceful settlement and pray that innocent lives are spared, the unalterable fact is just as the President stated: there can be no peace until the rockets stop.

I call on my fellow citizens of Massachusetts to join me in standing for democracy, for common values, for peace, and for international security by standing in support of Israel.
