Information on Asian Americans in Massachusetts
According to the 2000 United State Census, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans are the fastest growing racial group in Massachusetts, increasing by 68% between the years 1990 and 2000. In 1990, the APIA community constituted 2.4% of the Commonwealth's population. That number increased to 4% by the year 2000.
In Boston, the Asian American community increased by 46% within the decade while it rose by a staggering 123.5% during the same years in Lowell, Massachusetts.
In spite of these increases, the percentage of Asian Americans in State Government (elected or staff positions) remained stagnant. On the local level, the APIA community has only twelve identified APIA elected officials, and there has never been an elected official on the State level from the community.
