The fiscal year 2013 budget was signed by Governor Patrick effective July 1, 2012. Some provisions in the budget directly affect members of the State Employees’ Retirement System.

Group 2 for DCF Social Workers
Employees of the Department of Children and Families holding the title of social worker A/B, C, or D or successive titles who have been employed in such titles for 10 years or more will now be able to retire under group 2. Affected members seeking to retire under group 2 will need to submit a Group Classification Questionnaire in order for staff to verify their employment. This change is effective July 1, 2012 and is not retroactive. If you retired prior to this date we are not able to adjust your benefit.

Retirement Allowance for Section 101 Beneficiaries
Surviving spouses of members who retired on accidental disability before Option C was available will see an increase to their supplemental annual allowance from $9,000 to $12,000 per year. Benefits for these members will be adjusted in the coming months retroactive to July 1, 2012.

Cost of Living Adjustment
Members who have been retired at least one full fiscal year (before July 1, 2011) will receive a 3% Cost of Living Adjustment on up to $13,000 of their pension allowance. The adjustment will be included in the July benefit payment.
