Who is eligible to participate in the SMART Plan?

The SMART Plan is open to employees of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and participating governmental entities. There are no age or service requirements to enroll or participate in the SMART Plan.

How do I enroll?

If you are a full time employee or an OBRA/part time employee interested in contributing more than the mandatory 7½ % follow these steps:

1. Contact your local representative to set up a meeting convenient for you. To locate your local representative, click here or call the SMART Plan Customer Service Center at 1-877-457-1900 (Option 2).

2. Your local representative will help you:

  • Know the features and benefits of the Plan

  • Understand which specific investment options in the Plan  may be suitable for you.

  • Complete the enrollment forms.

The effective date of your salary deductions can be no earlier than the first pay period of the first month following your completion of the participation agreement and enrollment forms. You can also specify a later date to begin participation in the SMART Plan. Please note that it may take two or more payroll cycles for your payroll department to process your agreement.
