TRICARE (A Snapshot View)

TRICARE consists of:

  • TRICARE Prime - similar to a civilian HMO, retiree pays an annual fee
  • TRICARE Extra is a Preferred Provider Option (PPO)
  • TRICARE Standard, is a fee for service option
  • TRICARE for Life, for those 65 and over with Medicare part B

One must be enrolled in DEERS to participate in TRICARE, 1-800-538-9552.

Eligibility may be extended to: Active duty and retired service members and their spouses, unmarried children (ends at age 21 unless a full time student ending at 23), stepchildren, unremarried former spouses of active duty, retired, retired reserve, or deceased and Medal of Honor recipients and their family members. Dependent parents and parents-in-law may have limited eligibility.

Members of the reserve component who are called to active duty for more than 30 days are eligible for TRICARE. Family members are also eligible but must use an MTF (military treatment facility) or a TRICARE network provider.

TRICARE Dental programs are available through United Concordia Companies Inc. (UCCI) @ 1-800-866-8499. There may be some eligibility restrictions.

TRICARE offers prescriptions through MTP's, Network Providers, and the National Mail Order Pharmacy (NMOP) program.

Members of the Selected Reserve and Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) and/or family members would be eligible if ordered to active duty for more than 30 consecutive days and possess orders for duty status. It may be required to enroll for a specific time frame.

"Early" Tricare

Some members of the National Guard and Reserve (collectively known as the Reserve Component, or RC) who are issued delayed-effective-date active duty orders for more than 30 days in support of a contingency operation, are eligible for "early" TRICARE medical and dental benefits beginning on the later of either: (a) the date their orders were issued or (b) 90 days before they report to active duty.
