Due to advances in the Appeals Court's internal paperless practices and improved efficiencies that have reduced reliance on paper filings, it is hereby ordered, pursuant to Mass. R. App. P. 2, that the number of briefs and record appendices required to be filed, on or after August 1, 2016, in all cases is reduced as follows:
Notwithstanding the requirement in Mass. R. App. P. 19(b)(1) that 7 copies be filed, hereafter only 4 copies of each brief and each record appendix shall be filed with the Clerk, unless the Court or a single justice by order in a particular case shall direct a different number, and 2 copies of each shall continue to be served on counsel for each party separately represented.
Further, notwithstanding the requirement in Mass. R. App. P. 18(e) that in civil cases 5 copies of exhibits volumes and 2 copies of transcript volumes may be filed, hereafter only 2 copies of each exhibit volume and 1 copy of each transcript volume shall be filed with the appendix, and 1 copy of each exhibit and transcript volume shall continue to be served on counsel for each party separately represented.
Finally, parties are encouraged to register for the Appeals Court's electronic filing program, and to electronically file one PDF and no paper original or duplicates of these documents in appropriate case types.
