Chelsea/Route 1 Viaduct Rehabilitation Project

To ensure the safety of this critical connection, MassDOT has assembled a team to rehabilitate and restore the superstructure and roadway to a state of good repair.

The Chelsea Viaduct is structurally deficient and in need of repair and rehabilitation. The viaduct, first constructed in 1956-’57, carries 63,000 vehicles daily (including MBTA Route 111) on Route 1 through the Chelsea Curves to the Tobin Bridge, providing a crucial transportation link between Chelsea, the north shore, and Boston.
