Overview   of SHIRLEY - Bridge replacement project on Longley Road over Mulpus Brook

A Design Public Hearing will be held by MassDOT to discuss the proposed Bridge Replacement Project on Longley Road over Mulpus Brook in the Town of Shirley, MA.

Purpose:

The purpose of this hearing is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed Longley Road bridge replacement project in Shirley. All views and comments made at the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

Proposal:

The proposed bridge project consists of the replacement of existing twin corrugated steel plate pipe arch structures. The proposed new 54-foot (end to end) single span Precast Prestressed Concrete NEXT Beam superstructure will be supported on integral cast-in-place reinforced concrete abutments founded on steel H-piles. The proposed bridge will have a 30'-0" curb-to-curb roadway width providing two 15'-0" wide vehicular travel ways matching the existing approaches. The bridge will be closed during construction. Traffic and pedestrian access will be maintained with a temporary detour. Starting at the east end of the project on Longley Road, the proposed detour will follow Longley Road northeast, west on State Route 225 (Groton Road), south onto Townsend Road, east onto State Route 2A (Great Road), then back northeast on Longley Road to the west end of the project. Total detour length is approximately 3.1 miles. Proposed approach roadway work includes full depth pavement construction and micro milling pavement transitions that extend 75' west and 56' east of the proposed bridge. The proposed approach roadway will match the existing approach roadway between curbs and the existing 37'-0" approach roadway between guardrails will be narrowed to 30'-0" between guardrails. There will be no sidewalks on the proposed bridge or approach roadways.

A secure right-of-way is necessary for this project. Permanent and temporary easements are required. The Town of Shirley is responsible for acquiring all needed rights in private or public lands. MassDOT's policy concerning land acquisitions will be discussed at this hearing.

Written views received by MassDOT subsequent to the date of this notice and up to five (5) days prior to the date of the hearing shall be displayed for public inspection and copying at the time and date listed above. Plans will be on display one-half hour before the hearing begins, with an engineer in attendance to answer questions regarding this project. A project handout will be made available on the MassDOT website listed below.

Written statements and other exhibits in place of, or in addition to, oral statements made at the Public Hearing regarding the proposed undertaking are to be submitted to Patricia A. Leavenworth, P.E., Chief Engineer, MassDOT, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116, Attention: Bridge Project Management Section, Project File No. 608635.
