Executive Order  No. 22: Authorizing Sunday sales of perishable foodstuffs in hurricane emergency of August 31, 1954

WHEREAS, On September 1, 1954, I declared that a State of Emergency exists in the Commonwealth by reason of the devastation resulting from the hurricane of August 31, 1954, and

WHEREAS, the hurricane has caused widespread impairment and dislocation of domestic refrigeration facilities, and

WHEREAS, the impairment and dislocation of domestic refrigeration facilities have made it impossible for many house- holders to preserve perishable foods in their homes,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Christian A. Herter, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, acting under the provisions of Acts of 1950, Chapter 639, and all other authority vested in me, hereby issue the following order: That all purveyors of perishable foods be permitted to sell their wares on Sunday, September 5 and Monday, September 6, 1954.

GIVEN at the Executive Chamber in Boston, this second day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-four, and of the Independence of America, the one hundred and seventy-ninth.
