What you need for Apply for a Bonus on behalf of a Deceased Veteran

This is a one-time bonus which most received at discharge.  If you are not sure if the deceased veteran received it contact the Veterans’ Bonus Division prior to applying. Contact the Veterans’ Bonus Division if you need to confirm whether the bonus has been applied for in the past.

To apply for the Massachusetts Veterans’ bonus for a deceased servicemember, the active service must have fallen between one of the specified war time service dates.

  • Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) (September 11, 2001 to present)
  • Vietnam Conflict (July 1, 1958 to May 17, 1975)
  • Korean War (June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955)
  • World War II (September 16, 1940 to July 25, 1947)

All applicants will need:

  • A completed application - see the "How to apply" section below. 
  • The Veteran's DD214 or DD1300
  • The Veteran's Death Certificate
  • Residency documentation showing the veteran lived in Massachusetts for at least six months prior to entering the military (if available)

In addition:

  • Residency documentation:  The veteran must have been 6 months domicile in Massachusetts immediately prior to entry into the Armed Forces or prior to activation for Reserve and National Guard personnel. Documentation can be high school diploma/year book picture if entered within a year of graduating high school, W2, excise tax, lease/mortgage dated before veteran if available.
  • If residency documentation is not available our office can research residency.

Please note: Active service shall not include active duty for training in the Army National Guard, Air National Guard, or reserves.

Payments are paid to the heirs-at-law, below is the order of precedence for payment(s). 

Note:  If there is more than one heir-at-law; payments can be made in portions as the State Treasurer determined using the same below order of precedence for payments.

  1. Spouse and children
  2. Mother or father
  3. Brother or sister
  4. Other dependents

 

How to apply Apply for a Bonus on behalf of a Deceased Veteran

To submit your application online, complete our application form.

If you intend to submit your supporting attachments online, we recommend you gather your pertinent documentation before starting your application. We accept the following file formats:

  • PDF
  • DOC/DOCX
  • XLS/XSLX
  • JPG/JPEG, GIF, PNG, and TIF
  • ZIP 

Your application will not be considered complete until your supporting documents have been received. Before you submit your finalized application, you can either upload your documents online (preferred), or mail them to our office at the following address:

    You will need the following documents to apply:

    • Form DD214 (Discharge papers)
    • Certificate of Residency
    • Residency documentation showing you lived in Massachusetts before entering the military if available (high school diploma/yearbook, tax form, mortgage, etc.)
      • If you do not have residency documentation our office can research on your behalf

    1. Verify Veteran did not previously receive bonus
    2. Complete and sign a Veterans' Bonus Deceased Application
    3. Provide documentation showing veteran lived in Massachusetts prior to entering the military if available
    4. DD214 (showing honorable service) or DD1300 if died while on active service
    5. Death Certificate

    Note: Additional relationship or heir-at-law documentation may be requested if not listed on required documentation.

    Next steps for Apply for a Bonus on behalf of a Deceased Veteran

    1. Receive bonus

      Payments take approximately 4-6 weeks to process and deliver, via mailed check. Unfortunately, we do not have direct deposit services available.

    2. Appeal a denial

      You will receive a letter regarding your denied bonus detailing the reason(s) the application was not accepted.

      You are able to appeal the Division’s decision. You must send a written request for an appeal within 60 days from the date of receiving the denial.

    Welcome Home Bonus Payment Amounts

    $1,000

    • 1st time 6 continuous months active service within Continental United States (CONUS) or outside the continental U.S (OCONUS) other than Iraq, Afghanistan or other DoD designated imminent danger location (one time)

    $500

    Note: The law allows eligible individuals to receive only one initial $500 bonus for CONUS or OCONUS service

     

    If died while on active service, in addition to unpaid eligible bonuses.

    $1,000

    Subsequent Multiple Deployment Bonuses

    • Subsequent deployment in Iraq, Afghanistan or other DoD designated imminent danger location

    $500

    • Subsequent 6 continuous months CONUS or OCONUS deployment in direct support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Noble Eagle, Inherent Resolve, Freedom's Sentinel or any successor or related operation
