Apply for law enforcement agency electronic control weapon permission

To receive approval to use electronic control weapons (often referred to as tasers), law enforcement agencies must submit an application to the Secretary of Public Safety and Security.
Applications take approximately 3-4 weeks to review, unless additional follow-up questions are necessary.

What you need   for Apply for law enforcement agency electronic control weapon permission

  1. The training curriculum your agency plans to use to train its officers. Any training plan must follow 501 CMR 8.05. Your agency may use one of the following options:

    • The Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Basic Course Certification Lesson Plan. If you plan to use this curriculum, you must state in writing which internal agency policies will use the MPTC model plan to train officers.

    • The Taser® manufacturer lesson plan. If you plan to use this curriculum, you must state in writing which internal agency policies will use the Taser manufacturer lesson plan to train officers.

    • If you would like to use a different curriculum, your agency must submit its proposed curriculum to the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS).

  2. The training received by the curriculum instructors. You must include a statement about the training of all present and future instructors in your agency policy.

Decision

The Secretary’s decision will be sent in writing to your law enforcement agency. If approved, your agency must submit data via the online ECW reporting application on DCJIS administered by the Office of Grants and Research. You will receive instructions in your approval package.

Once approved, your agency may begin to train its officers in the proper use of such weapons.
