What you need for Apply for the S.A.F.E (Student Awareness of Fire Education) & Senior SAFE Programs

State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey is pleased to announce that the S.A.F.E. and Senior SAFE Grant applications for Fiscal Year 2023 are now available. The applications are due back at the Department of Fire Services no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 2022.

The final grant award amounts are likely to change depending on final funding approval, and the number of departments that apply for the grants.

All FY21 and prior S.A.F.E. and Senior SAFE year-end reports must be on file with the Public Education unit to be eligible. The FY22 End of Year Report will be due on January 31, 2023.

Additional eligibility requires that all Massachusetts Fire Incident Reports (MFIRS) through June 30, 2022 have been reported to the Public Education Fire Data and Analysis unit.

  1. Download the Notice of Funding Opportunity

    Download the NOTICE OF FUNDING OPPORTUNITY.

    You can use a single application to apply for both the S.A.F.E. and the Senior SAFE Grant programs. You will find more information regarding the actual application within the Notice of Funding Opportunity.

    Review your community tier amount FY23 Statewide Tier Amounts. Tiers show how much your department can apply for. Fire districts can apply for the percent of eligible funds that equals the percent of the population they protect.

  2. Parts of the Application

    Be sure to submit all parts of the application:

    • Cover Sheet - Fire department information
    • Community Data Sheet - includes information about the school population
    • Budget Worksheet and Narrative - explains how you will spend funds
    • Mission Statement - is an agreement to all parties to the mission of the S.A.F.E. Program
    • Grant Narrative - summarizes the programs goals and objectives
    • Signature Page - must include wet signatures from the fire  and school departments. If you submit your application online, you must mail this page.
    • Evaluation - submit samples of the student and instructor evaluations you will use.

    Review the checklist before submitting the application.

  3. Past Year-End Reports and MFIRS

    As part of the contract for S.A.F.E. and Senior SAFE, fire departments agree to submit year-end reports by the due date. Your FY22 application is incomplete if any year-end reports are missing.

    The FY21 Year-End report is due January 31, 2022, and the FY22 Year-End report is due January 31, 2023.

    The fire department must report all fire incidents through June 30, 2022, before grant funds are released.
