What you need for Apply for the SAFE (Student Awareness of Fire Education) & Senior SAFE Programs

State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine is pleased to announce that the Fiscal Year 2024 FY24 SAFE and Senior SAFE Grant application is now open. Applications are due no later than Thursday February 15, 2024, at 5:00pm. Fire departments of every city, town, fire district and eligible state authority fire department of the Commonwealth are encouraged to apply.

The total amount of funding available is $1,924,866. The final grant award amounts are likely to change depending on final funding approval and the number of departments that apply for the grants.

All FY22 and prior SAFE and Senior SAFE year-end reports must be on file with the Public Education unit to be eligible. The FY23 End of Year Report is due on January 31, 2024.

Any unexpended SAFE and Senior SAFE grant funds from FY22 and prior must be returned with a completed budget worksheet to:

Fire departments must be compliant with all MFIRS reporting through December 2022 at the time of application submission deadline to be eligible for funding.

  2. DOWNLOAD and SAVE the FY24 SAFE and Senior SAFE Grant Application to your device. Name the document: (your) Department_FY24 Grant

  3. ATTEND a virtual and/or in-person grant application tutorial to learn how to fill out the grant application.

  1. SAVE the application to your device. Name the document: (your) Department_FY24 Grant

     (i.e. DFS_FY24 Grant)

  2. Submit the completed excel file by email no later than February 15, 2024 at 5:00 pm as an Excel file.

  • Email the COMPLETE application with all supporting documents i.e., self-made evaluation(s) to:  SAFE.FireSafetyDivision@mass.gov.
  • Handwritten applications are not accepted. Hard copies should not be mailed or faxed to DFS.
