Massachusetts State Police College Internships are civilian (non-sworn) volunteer unpaid positions that may be used for academic credit requirement. The duties of interns selected for the volunteer roles are at the discretion of the intern’s assigned State Police supervisor and in direct relation to the assigned track. Each internship placement and experience will vary depending on placement. Volunteer roles, scope of authority, and attire are commensurate with the tasks assigned by the supervisor. Supervisors of assigned interns will provide appropriate training/guidance required to fulfill volunteer roles and assigned tasks.

Interns will learn about the structure, staffing, mission, activities, programs and services of the Massachusetts Department of State Police.

College students interested in participating in the program must initiate the application process by submitting an application online. The application process includes:

  • Internship Application
    • Cover Letter and Resume
    • Letter of Recommendation
  • Official Transcript(s)
  • Forms
    • Confidentiality Agreement
    • Waiver of Agency Liability
    • Authorization for Release of Information
    • Verification & Evaluation Form
    • Policy Review and Acknowledgement
      • Note: This paperwork will be issued if assigned.
  • Internship placements are not guaranteed. If a placement is not available for the requested semester, prospective interns are encouraged to apply for another semester.

Applications can be completed and submitted online via the College Internship Program Application.

Once completed, please forward all required forms to student.internship@pol.state.ma.us. Additionally, official transcripts should be forwarded to this address.

These required forms include:

  • Authorization for Release of Information
  • Verification & Evaluation Form

Selection

Human Resources will review completed application packages and collaborate with an individual from the candidate’s desired placement track to arrange an interview. 

A background investigation is conducted on students recommended for internships. The successful applicant and their assigned supervisor will jointly develop the student's full schedule at the start of the internship.

Areas of Placement (Tracks)   for Apply to the Massachusetts State Police College Internship Program

  • Law Enforcement track – College students interested in law enforcement careers will be assigned to various State Police units to gain an understanding of officer duties.
  • Forensic Science track – This track is limited to college students with science/laboratory focused majors. Placements will be within the Forensics Services Division (FSD).
  • Administrative track – College students interested in administrative careers will be placed within the Division of Administrative Services (DAS) units. DAS provides support for the Department to effectively deliver its core public safety services.
