What you need for Participate in the Biomonitoring Massachusetts Study
The Biomonitoring Massachusetts Study is being conducted by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is providing funding and technical support for the study.
The goal of the Biomonitoring Massachusetts Study is to augment CDC’s National Biomonitoring Program (NBP) by improving DPH’s ability to detect, diagnose, and prevent potential health outcomes following exposure to certain environmental chemicals.
For information about this state-based CDC program please visit their website.
Through the Biomonitoring Massachusetts Study, DPH will:
- Determine a baseline level of chemicals in a sample of Massachusetts residents
- Determine a baseline level of chemicals for individuals in targeted communities with a high risk of potential exposure
- Improve DPH’s ability to improve biomonitoring following chemical emergencies
The Biomonitoring Massachusetts Study is led by a team of highly skilled scientists in the Analytical Chemistry Division at the State Public Health Laboratory and the Environmental Toxicology Program in the Bureau of Environmental Health.
The levels of chemicals that are measured in study participants will be compared to levels that CDC has measured from participants nationwide. The participants are from similar demographic groups (e.g., age, gender, and race/ethnicity). Information about the nationwide sample may be found in the CDC National Exposure Report.
