When traveling on toll roads, it is important to understand your responsibility and ensure tolls are paid accordingly. Please review the information below regarding tolls and rentals:

All Electronic Tolling (AET) in Massachusetts

When traveling in a rental car, Massachusetts rental customers have four options regarding tolls:

  1. Avoid all toll roads, tunnels and bridges.
  2. Use a personal Toll Pass Device in the rental vehicle (verify the device works in all states traveled).
  3. Rent a Toll Pass Device from the rental vehicle location for a fee (current vendor offers three brands for $3.95 per rental day, up to five days, max $19.75). This fee will be listed on your rental receipt as a separate charge. This may be the best option if you are traveling outside of Massachusetts, as Massachusetts is the only 100% AET state nearby.
    a. Renting a Toll Pass Device allows travel through any northeast toll road, tunnel, or bridge and pay separately for the cost of the toll. This toll will be collected up to 90 days after the rental ends and will be charged using the same payment method as that used for the rental.
  4. Do not rent a Toll Pass Device from the rental vehicle location and do not have a personal TPD.
    a. When traveling through a toll in Massachusetts, the rental license plate will be read and the vendor will receive the toll notification. At this point, the drivers are opted-in to the Toll Pass program automatically (current vendor charges a $3.95 toll pass auto opt-in fee, which is similar to renting a Toll Pass Device, but on a usage day basis. For each day a toll is incurred, a charge of $3.95, up to a maximum of $19.75, per rental will be charged, along with the tolls, using the same payment method as that used for the rental).

Toll Pass Devices (TPDs) are available for rent at select locations: Boston Logan Airport, all downtown Boston locations, Brookline, Brighton, Somerville, and Cambridge.
