Independent Living Centers

If you have a disability, an Independent Living Center can help you live on your own or be more independent while living with others.

Independent Living is having control over your life. This means being able to make your own decisions and choices to the fullest extent possible. People with disabilities are often denied the right and opportunity to make their own decisions. The term "Independent Living" also describes a wide range of services to improve your ability in all activities. The Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) uses the independent living philosophy in all areas of Community Living services. Independence may mean different things to different people and should be defined by your choice of resources or services.
