Access to Adoption Records

Learn more about obtaining adoption paperwork.

All adoption paperwork held by the court is not available to the public, unless a judge orders otherwise. An adopted person may not see his adoption court files about his biological parents without proving to the court that there is a good reason to do so. Placement agencies can only release certain information to an adopted person, adoptive parent, or biological parent. Please note that the Registry of Vital Records has a procedure for people who have been adopted to see their birth records, per Massachusetts General Law. Please visit their site for more information.
