Overview
The Gleasondale Road Bridge is showing significant signs of deterioration. It has been partially closed with traffic restrictions since a 2015 inspection. MassDOT undertook a project development, permitting, and design process to determine the best course of repair. That process found that the bridge required substantial replacement.
The new bridge will:
- Meet current design and safety standards
- Restore two-way traffic
- Include bicycle-accommodating shoulders and sidewalks on both sides of the bridge
Background
The Gleasondale Road Bridge underwent a safety inspection in 2015. The inspection found the deck, beams, and northern abutment to be beyond repair. To address these conditions, the bridge was limited to carrying one lane of alternating traffic and one sidewalk. A temporary traffic signal is being used to control traffic. The bridge is also subject to regular closures for inspections, with impacts to traffic.
The bridge carries Route 62 over the Assabet River. It is an important commuter and trucking route between Stow and Hudson. Route 62 is also an important corridor for emergency response among several towns.
MassDOT has assembled a team to replace the bridge. The new structure will:
- Maintain the bridge's current footprint
- Restore two-way traffic
- Restore 6-foot sidewalks on both sides
- Provide 5-foot bicycle-accommodating shoulders on both sides
- Meet current design and safety standards
