About the project

Accelerated Bridge Construction methods will be used to minimize impacts to the traveling public. There will be two weekend closures to replace both the northbound and southbound bridges carrying Route 24. During bridge closures, Route 24 traffic will be maintained through two lanes in each direction.

Stage 1: Replace Route 24 Southbound Bridge

Weekend closure: April 5 to April 8, 2024*

Route 24 Impacts:

  • From 8:00 P.M. on April 5 to 4:00 A.M. on April 8, there will be lane shifts and lane reductions from 3 to 2 in each direction near the Route 24 southbound bridge.
  • At the bridge, traffic will cross the median and move onto the open northbound bridge.

Canton Street Impacts:

  • Canton Street closed from 5:00 P.M. on April 5 to 4:00 P.M. on April 8 for public safety during active overhead construction.

*Closure dates are weather dependent

Stage 2: Replace Route 24 Northbound Bridge

Weekend closure: May 3 to May 6, 2024*

Route 24 Impacts:

  • From 8:00 P.M. on May 3 to 4:00 A.M. on May 6, there will be lane shifts and lane reductions from 3 to 2 in each direction near the Route 24 northbound bridge.
  • At the bridge, traffic will cross the median and move onto the open southbound bridge.

Canton Street Impacts:

  • Canton Street closed from 5:00 P.M. on May 3 to 4:00 P.M. on May 6 for public safety during active overhead construction.

*Closure dates are weather dependent

This project will:

  • Replace bridges' entire decks and support beams
  • Repair abutments, installing new abutment caps and bridge seats
  • Install new safety barriers and deck drains on the bridges
  • Replace sidewalks and pavement along Canton Street below the bridge
  • Relocate utilities to below Canton Street

The project will improve the bridges’ safety and capacity, extending their service life for an estimated 75-years.

Detour route

Canton Street below the bridge will be closed during the two work weekends. Traffic will be redirected through an 11-mile detour (below) down State roadways and higher volume local roads.

Detour graphic for the Canton Street closure. Traffic will be rerouted via Route 139, Route 28, Canton Street and Turnpike Street.

Background

The Route 24 bridges were built in 1957 and are well beyond their expected 50-year service life. Frequent deck repairs are required to maintain a state of good repair. The bridges are currently safe but are showing signs of deterioration. They need to be replaced to avoid future traffic disruptions due to ongoing repairs.

The project is located just south of the I-93/ Route 24 interchange. The bridges carry over 118,000 vehicles per day. The bridge replacements will impact travelers along Route 24. The Canton Street detours will impact the surrounding communities, including Avon, Canton, Randolph, and Stoughton.
