Project Details

The primary goal of the Route 44 over Route 24 Bridge Replacement Project is to replace the existing bridge structure, which is structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. The project will use a bridge lateral slide technique during an overnight shutdown and detour of both Route 24 and Route 44, allowing traffic to be temporarily shifted south and making it possible to construct the bridge in phases. This will reduce traffic impacts and detours of Route 24 traffic and minimize the amount of traffic shifts on Route 44 when compared to a typical construction approach.

For this project, MassDOT has utilized Design-Build Project delivery where one entity is responsible for both the design and construction. This alternative contracting method not only helps reduce the time needed to carry out the project, but also promotes collaboration between the engineers, contractor, and MassDOT staff.

Other project goals include incorporating functionality and safety improvements into the roadway and highway interchange system between South Street West and Orchard Street on Route 44. The project also includes:

  • Improving pedestrian, bicycle, and ADA accommodations along Route 44
  • Reconstructing on and off ramps between Route 44 and Route 24
  • Improving the roadway drainage system
  • Installing interim and final traffic signals
  • Relocating utilities
  • Addressing traffic weaving issues on Route 24 southbound
  • Raising vertical clearance of the bridge
  • Widening the bridge
  • Restoring landscaping
