Eight bridges in eight weekends

This summer between June 18 and August 16, 2021, MassDOT will replace or substantially repair eight bridges along the Boston/Worcester corridor of I-90. This is a major construction project on one of the state's most important roadways, updating a 60+ year-old infrastructure that serves over 100,000 drivers a day. And most will hardly notice. That’s because the Acceler-8: I-90 Bridge Replacements project uses innovative management, contracting, and construction techniques that will allow us to complete the work in just eight weekends, when traffic is at its lowest.

For many of you, Acceler-8 will mean driving home over an old bridge on Friday and taking a new one to work on Monday, with no interruption to your commute. For those of you traveling on I-90 on weekends, we have carefully scheduled construction to avoid summer holiday traffic. We will make sure that you know exactly when and where to expect detours on local roads and delays on I-90. All in all, Acceler-8 is the smart way to take care of our essential transportation infrastructure and will extend the life of each bridge by 75 years.

How fast is Acceler-8? By comparison, the I-90 bridge over the MDC Reservoir in Framingham took 3 years and impacted commuter traffic through most of construction. All Acceler-8 bridge construction will be completed in one summer over eight weekends. For most people, the transition from old bridge to new bridge will be seamless.

How do we do it? Planning for a project like Acceler-8 does not happen overnight. We’ve spent over two years developing the infrastructure that will make eight bridges in eight weekends possible. Acceler-8 uses single-contractor design-build management and accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques pioneered on MassDOT’s Fast 14 project a decade ago, and most recently the Commonwealth Ave bridge replacement project. This is a tried-and-true strategy that works – and that’s why we’re confident in our promise: eight bridges in eight weekends.

How will I be impacted?

If you’re a weekday commuter, here’s what you can expect: after the Friday evening rush hour, we will close a single direction over the stretch of I-90 impacted by bridge construction. And by 5AM Monday morning, the bridge will reopen with all lanes available for travel.

Impacts to I-90

For those of you who travel on weekends, here’s what you can expect: in the bridge construction area, all vehicles will be shifted to the opposite side of the highway using a median crossover. Two lanes will be open in each direction with temporary barriers maintaining traffic flow. We will do everything possible to reduce the impact of this change in traffic patterns, but you should still anticipate significant delays and congestion.

Impacts to local roads

For those of you who travel on weekends, at approximately 4pm we will also close the local roadway below the bridge to traffic to ensure public safety during the bridge work. Local access will be maintained for residents and businesses. A signed detour route will be in place and advance notification will be provided.

See below for links to PDFs that contain maps and text detailing the planned detour routes for each road closure:

We will make sure that you know exactly when and where to expect detours and delays. Construction has been carefully scheduled to avoid summer holiday traffic.

We understand that the Acceler-8 project will also impact local residents and businesses who regularly use secondary roads that will have increased weekend congestion due to detours during construction. That’s why we’re doing everything possible to minimize traffic disruptions for Acceler-8, especially during the crucial holiday weekends.
