The Office of the Inspector General (Office) is seeking candidates who are passionate about enhancing public confidence in government, ensuring accountability, and promoting the best interests of the people of the Commonwealth in the use of public funds and property. Working in a collaborative and inclusive team environment, the Data Analyst Intern plays an important role in assisting multiple divisions across the Office. The Data Analyst Intern will identify and analyze data that could be relevant to investigations and reviews related to fraud, waste or abuse in the use of public funds. The Data Analyst Intern will communicate findings and present data visualizations and dashboards to inform recommendations and reports.

Since its creation as the first state-level inspectors general office in the country, the Office has been at the forefront of promoting effective government and the responsible use of public money and property. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of auditors, investigators, attorneys and administrative staff.   

The Office is seeking a Data Analyst Intern for the 2022-2023 academic year. The internship is a part-time position of 20 hours per week with a flexible schedule within the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Office is currently operating in a hybrid remote and in-person capacity.

Responsibilities

The position's duties include:

  • Maintaining a high level of integrity and protecting sensitive data.
  • Working as part of a team with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Performing background research to understand context.
  • Cleaning and analyzing data from warehouses.
  • Writing well-documented code and processes that follow principles of reproducibility. 
  • Communicating findings and descriptive and inferential statistics in reports, graphics, tables, and presentations.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • Complete or ongoing course work towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in a quantitative field.
  • Experience with R or Python.
  • Experience manipulating and cleaning data.
  • Familiarity with statistical and analytical methods that support research and assessment.
  • Ability to present findings in a user-friendly manner to non-technical staff to inform conclusions and recommendations, both verbally and through reports.
  • Comfort with open ended analytical projects as well as task- and product-driven projects.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical and research skills.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Other valued experiences and skills include:

  • Demonstrated experience with visual analysis concepts.
  • Experience using Tableau.
  • Experience applying outlier analysis techniques.
  • Experience analyzing geographic information.
  • Bilingual abilities.
