This project is within the Commissioner’s Office specifically within the Office of Performance Management and Quality Improvement which oversees the Public Health Accreditation process, documentation, and management of key documents like the State Health Assessment, State Health Improvement Plan and Strategic Plan. This project will be an input into the Department’s State Health Assessment and Improvement Plan.

Project Description:

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) aims to create a useful and impactful 5-year State Health Assessment and Improvement Plan that achieves health equity for all people in the Commonwealth. Given that racism and other systems of oppression are the root cause of preventable health inequities, MDPH is explicitly leading their state health assessment and improvement plan with a focus on race and racism to address structural inequities and social determinants of health.

The department seeks several interns to help support the development of this racial equity centered state health assessment and improvement plan. The internship is an opportunity to build a state health assessment and improvement plan planning skillset and learn firsthand about the state department of public health context. The tasks involved include identifying and obtaining existing documentation of Massachusetts community health assessment and improvement plans that both communities and health systems have completed between 2017 to present. Meet with SHA/SHIP leadership team to identify key search/rubric for conducting analysis. Conduct coding and analysis in a qualitative software like NVivo. Collaborating with the department’s internal leadership team (Commissioner’s Office level staff) and advisory group, translating the findings for informing the state health assessment and improvement plan.

  • Willingness to learn new skills & work as part of a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to addressing institutional and structural racism
  • Experience or interest in using NVivo or other qualitative data analysis tools

Commitment:

8-10 hours per week
