Overnight Bridge Foundation Demolition, Week of September 26

MassDOT’s contractor will demolish the foundation piers of the former Route 18 bridge over the Commuter Rail tracks during the week of September 26. The work is anticipated to start on Sunday, September 26 and continue for four nights. The work will be performed between the hours of 9:00 PM each night to 6:00 AM the next day.

  • The work will not impact Commuter Rail service on the Kingston/Plymouth Line.
  • All modes of travel on Route 18 will be maintained.
  • Efforts will be made to control the noise levels; however, this is major demolition that will generate noise.

Remaining Work in 2021

Final paving of the bridge and roadway will occur in fall 2021, and the project will be complete by December 2021.

Traffic Information overview

MassDOT will maintain one lane of travel, in both directions, throughout construction.

The project requires three weekend shutdowns of the MBTA Kingston/Plymouth Commuter Rail line. The shutdowns are necessary for the contractor to safely replace the bridge that carries Route 18 over the railroad. MassDOT and the MBTA are coordinating closely with the contractor. The project team will announce the shutdowns with advance notice. Buses will replace trains on the MBTA Kingston/Plymouth Commuter Rail line. The MBTA and MassDOT encourage commuter rail passengers to use the Middleborough/Lakeville line during the three weekend shutdowns, if possible.
