Due to cold weather, several of the Department of Conservation and Recreation\u2019s (DCR) First Day Hikes have been cancelled or modified for the safety of residents and participants. Updates on the three remaining hikes will be available on the agency\u2019s hotline at 617-626-1450 or on Twitter @MassDCR. \n\nAcross the nation, America\u2019s State Parks will provide opportunities to explore close-to-home natural resources spanning mountain ranges, grassland reservations, forests, beaches and islands. Visitors will often witness breathtaking vistas or overlooks while being guided by knowledgeable state park interpreters. In Massachusetts, DCR park staff will lead the hikes, which average one to three miles or longer depending on location. Details about each hike and tips to prepare are provided on DCR\u2019s website at www.mass.gov/dcr. Visitors attending should wear appropriate foot wear for the conditions and bring hats, gloves, scarves and other necessary outdoor apparel. \n\nIn addition, several Boston ice rinks will hold free public skating hours on New Year\u2019s Day from 11:00AM to 4:00PM. Participating locations include Kelly Outdoor Rink in Jamaica Plain, Murphy Memorial Rink in South Boston, and Steriti Rink in the North End. Steriti Rink will also be open noon \u2013 10:00PM on Sunday, December 31. Public ice skating times and locations of DCR managed rinks can be found on the agency\u2019s webpage, as well as a full list of all DCR owned rinks.\n\n\u00a0\n\nThe following hikes have been cancelled: \n\n\u00a0\n\nCarson Beach and Dorchester Heights, 12:00PM\n\n165 William J. Day Boulevard, South Boston\n\n\u00a0\n\nNantasket Beach Reservation, 11:00AM\n\nRoute 3A, Hull\n\n\u00a0\n\nThe following hikes and events will continue as modified:\n\n\u00a0\n\nBlackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park, 1:00PM\n\n287 Oak Street, Uxbridge\n\nParticipants will meet at the Visitor Center (registration begins at 12:30PM). Visitors can warm up after the hike at the River Bend Farm Visitor Center with hot chocolate. Hike will be modified due to weather.\n\nThe event is being co-sponsored by the Blackstone Heritage Corridor and the Blackstone River Watershed Association.\n\n\u00a0\n\nWalden Pond State Reservation, 12:00PM\n\n915 Walden Street/Route 126, Concord\n\nParticipants will meet at the New Visitor Center. Hot chocolate and light snacks will be made available after the hike. Hike will be modified due to weather.\n\nThe event is being co-sponsored by the Walden Woods Project, the Friends Group of Walden Pond State Reservation.\n\n\u00a0\n\nBreakheart Reservation, 10:00AM\n\n177 Forest Street, Saugus\n\nNo guided hike will be offered. The Christopher P. Dunne Visitor Center will be open from 10:00AM to 1:00pm. Coffee and hot chocolate will be available. \n\nThe event is being co-sponsored by the Friends of Breakheart.\n\n\u00a0\n\nBlue Hills Reservation, 1:00PM\n\n840 Hillside Street, Milton\n\nParticipants will meet at the Houghton\u2019s Pond parking lot. Please arrive early and allow time for parking. Hot chocolate and snacks on sale at noon by Venture Scouting. Hike will be modified due to weather.\n\n\u00a0\n\nGreat Falls Discovery Center, 1:00PM\n\n2 Avenue A, Turners Falls\n\nNo guided hike will be offered. The Great Hall will be open for a hot chocolate reception.\n\nThe event is being co-sponsored by the Friends of the Great Falls Discovery Center.
